Access and admission

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the general requirements established by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the program applies specific criteria for evaluating the applications:

1) Academic record: 60%.*

2) Curriculum vitae: 15% (See Instructions for registration)

3) Adequacy of the applicant's profile to the objectives and contents of the program: 5%.

4) Language skills: 5%.

5) Interview (if required): 5%.

6) Other qualifications: 10%.

 

*1) Academic record: The admission board will rate the grades obtained by the applicant in either Bachelor's or Master's degree studies. A minimum grade for access may be set.

2) Curriculum vitae: Aspects such as additional degrees and courses, internships or collaborations in departments and/or research groups, grants and awards, authorship of publications and congress contributions, attendance to scientific meetings, computer skills, etc., will be considered in this section.

3) Profile adequacy: Previous training in Health Sciences, Experimental Sciences, Food Sciences, Agronomy, etc. is the most suitable profile. Holding one of the Master's degrees offered at the UCM Faculty of Veterinary Sciences will also be valued.

4) Language skills: a minimum level of English equivalent to B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages must be documented. For foreing students, B1 level of Spanish is recommended. Knowledge of other languages will also be valued.

5) A personal interview may be requested. Among other aspects, language skills and other capabilities of the applicant will be assessed.

6) Other qualifications: The pre-admission in any of the research groups participating in the program to conduct the thesis will be highly valued. Applicants must provide evidence of having established a previous contact or agreement with a professor of the program regarding the supervision of the thesis or, alternatively, a letter of motivation indicating the research lines in which they are interested. It is highly recommended that applicants contact the program coordination (doctorado-vet@ucm.es) for guidance on the groups and researchers involved in the lines of interest.

 

AVAILABLE PLACES

The PhD Program in Veterinary Sciences offers 50 places for new students each academic year, 40 for full-time students and 10 for part-time students. Five percent of the available places will be reserved for students with specific needs derived from disabilities.

 

APPLICATION AND REGISTRATION DATES

Application: from March 15 to September 20 each year.

Registration: Second half of October each year. Registration must be renewed annually as long as the student remains active in the PhD program.

RECOMMENDED PROFILE

Students with a Bachelor's degree in Health Sciences, Experimental Sciences, Food Sciences, Agricultural Engineering or similar.

If the number of credits of the Bachelor's degree is lower than 300 ECTS or equivalent, an official Master's degree related to the same disciplines will be also required (it can be in progress at the time of application).

Students from educational systems outside the European Higher Education Area must present at the time of application (or at least have initiated the process) the access permission to PhD studies at UCM.

Once registered, students will receive tutorial sessions on different aspects of the program and will have access to the UCM virtual campus.

Each student will have a tutor who will also provide information and guidance, in addition to the thesis supervisors.
